Welcome to the Department of Building Safety.  This department is established by ordinance as the enforcement entity for local codes and ordinances as they relate to structures built within the city and to land uses.


The purpose of building codes are to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety and personal welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, energy conservation, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations


Zoning ordinances have also been adopted to preserve and promote the public health, safety, peace, comfort, convenience, prosperity, and general welfare of the citizens of Missouri Valley, Iowa.  These ordinances are in place to achieve several objectives.  A partial list of objectives would include the following:

  1. -To provide a precise plan for the physical development of the City.

  2. -To foster harmonious, wholesome, and attractive living environment.

  3. -To promote stability of land use and protect from inharmonious influences and harmful intensions.

  4. -To prevent excessive population densities and overcrowding of the land with structures.

  5. -To protect and enhance real property values.
